Balto - Analysis

Umm, some interesting artwork...

Wolf McCloud :

I know people complain about the cover work for the Balto films (especially the DVD releases, because personally I find nothing wrong with the original VHS copy I have), but has anyone ever complained about the back?

On the back of Balto 3: Wings of Change, there are some interesting edits so that the characters would 'fit in' better (I guess):

Balto and Jenna are off to the left of the case, smiling while standing on a snow-covered cliff. However, their legs were obviously cut out of that particular scene. So what do they do? They draw some legs for them dogs, that's what! The legs look out of place and the coloring is off, and the feet have been shaded in a way that makes them mis-match the rest of the characters even more.

The same thing is going down for the picture to the far right of the sled team. Balto is also sporting an interesting pattern on his chest, what with his lighter gray fur becoming a single line just below the harness. Also, he has no chest. His neck ends under his collar, and then his legs are kind of cut-and-pasted there. Ralph and Kirby's legs are smaller than they're supposed to be, and the gray one (whichever one that is, I haven't watched it in a while :( ) has a giant head and a teeny-tiny body.

Balto also has this weird coloring down that was apparent on the back of the Balto DVD cover (and cover slip that had the chapters on it): Instead of being that nice brown-gray/light-gray belly/brown ears thing, he's completely brown with a yellow belly. Well, okay, no. That was only on the back of the B1 DVD case. The B3 VHS case has a kind of gray color for Balto's belly. Both are still obviously wrong, though. And he also kind of looks like that on the back of the B2 DVD case.

Overall the artist(s) for the covers failed. They did a good job on like, capturing a scene or two from the movie, but still. Errors like that may be small but they're noticeable...

Your arguments are persuasive, but they would be moreso if I had ever seen the back of the B3 VHS (all I've seen is the DVD). Perhaps you should have included a picture.

To Dragon Tamer:

I would have included the pictures... alas, I'm not even sure the pictures in question have ever been leaked onto the Internet. But yes, they're pretty much a lazy man's editing job.

Oh yes. I've noticed the colouring was off as soon as I saw the back cover. You also forgot to mention that Balto and Jenna are not leaning on each other; there's a small gap inbetween them. Watch the movie again and look closely. (Also, on the front of the cover, Kodi looks rather small. Actually, I think he looks cuter that way!) Great article anyways!

Wow. Well, the VHS/DVD designer isn't the same person who did the animation in Balto 3 (or probaly Balto or Balto 2). What you ganna do? *sigh*

wow. I never really realized all these things. I knew that balto's coloring was wrong but I never took the time to look at everything on the back of the cover! Great job!
