Balto - Analysis

Notice the changes in Balto's animated form

catwhohas14tails :

Style in drawings and animation is one thing I notice. Especially in the Balto films. One may not realize this, but the animation style in Balto: Wolf Quest and Balto: Wings of Change are very different than the original Balto movie. For instance, the style in Balto1 is simpler than either Balto2 or Balto3. It's hard to describe, so I'll just use pictures to point this out. Now, every character has changed in some way (age not being considered since Balto seems to have aged more than Muk and Luk) and since Balto IS the main character of the movies, I'll use him for an example.

1) Balto's stance:

In B1, Balto rarely stood up straight, his back was flat, as like a normal dog stands (1st pic). In B2, he stood more erect and his back was drawn, for lack of a better word, sloppy (2nd pic). In B3 the style improved a bit, however, Balto still stood erect, and dogs normally don't stand up straight (3rd pic). And also, Balto's paws in B1 are different. His paws in B1 only composed of a few simple lines (1st pic). In B2, paws were drawn more complex (2nd pic).

2) Balto's face:

Balto's face had some differences too. He looks much older. I'm not letting that excuse for the change in style slide, because Muk and Luk haven't aged one bit since we first seen them. In B1, his face was, for lack of a better word, pointer than in B2 and B3 (6th pic). Judging by his snout, anyway, it gave a very sharp point, also giving him younger character. In B2 his nose was rounded off and thinner than in B1 (5th pic). In B3, his nose kept it's dullness, but thickened, maybe to try to match B1 better (4th pic). Balto's muzzle also thickened with each sequel, as well. And his eyes tended to change shape. In B2, his eyes were more pentagon-shaped. In B3 his eyes grew smaller. Also in B1, Balto's facial expressions were alot more powerful than in B2 or B3. His eyebrows arched more, going along with scenes with alot of emotion in them.

3) Balto's color:

As many of you have noticed, Balto's color changed alot too. In B1, he was a light brown color. In B2, his fur was a greyer color. In B3, he was actually more purple/brown than either. His eyes' colors changed too. In B1 his eyes were yellow, when in B2 the yellow in his eyes was very very light, almost white. They noticed this difference and changed his eyes back yellow in B3, except for one scene (when he was catching baby Kodi with his paws) his eyes were pure white.

4) Aside from his appearance, Balto's movement changed too. In B1 his motion was more realistic for a wolfdog. For example, the scene where he's trotting up the line of dogs toward the front of the line (after Steele falls off the cliff) he trots alot like a wolf would. In B2, just throughout the whole movie, if Balto was doing anything but walking, it looked weird for a wolfdog to do. Like in the picture below, what's with his shoulder? It's not like a dog's shoulder at all. It's more human-like if anything (10th pic). In B3, in the picture below, his arms bend in a funny way. His arms cross, which is abnormal for a canine because they don't have human-like elbows or shoulders (9th pic). Also in B3, when Balto is running through the town and Stella is following him, his head doesn't move with his legs, it's like in it's 'own little world.'

5) Luk's face:

A bit off topic, I know, but this is a major change for Luk. In B1 his nose was brown and his eyes were far apart. In B2 and B3, his nose was pink, and his eyes were close together. Explain THAT one!

Balto wasn't the only character that changed in these movies, Jenna and Boris have too. I am aware that it had been over a 5 year difference since B1 and B2 came out, and that the animators for B1 and B2 and B3 were different people. I am also aware that these are kids movies and kids don't care about this stuff. But still, I think that the animators could've tried a little harder to really make these movies 'enjoyable for the whole family.' It's not just the animation that's the problem, it's the plot, but that's a different story. If a nobody like me thinks that these movies' quality could've had a better outcome, the animators could think the same, you know?

That's the best comparative I've seen, good job! It's strange to see that some of the lines are in fact, more complex in the sequels than in the original...I believe that what the team behind the sequels lacked, is the studies on real dogs that they did for Balto 1. (that we can see the documentary) Now, if only they could have done the same comparative before making the sequels, or if they could take a look at that before making another one...

SGA, January 22, 2006 at 14: 58

You've got to admit...he did change alot. He looked really old in B2...he looked like he needed a shave. I didn't like his eyes, they creeped me out. I do think though that the animators made a better effort on Balto 3! Like Steet said though, great comparative!

Aniu_lupe, January 22, 2006 at 15: 33

Very good article!I couldn't do it any better.Congrats, and like Steet and SGA said :"Great comparative"! Also,I agree on all the things you pointed out!

wolf´lion, January 22, 2006 at 15: 45

is good;)

white raven-WMP, January 22, 2006 at 16: 08

baltofan01WMP[subAM], January 22, 2006 at 16: 12

very interesting. cool

Olivia_loves_Balto, January 22, 2006 at 16: 27

Wow! Very, very observant! I also notice in B1, Balto has brown eyes, and in B2, he has BLUE eyes! :o

ApricotWolf, January 22, 2006 at 17: 02

Very good! When I first saw B2, I was like, wait a sec... Balto's different, isn't he? Because he looked a bit older, and then younger in B3. You have good eyes, Cat!

Detektiv-Ran, January 22, 2006 at 19: 42

I noticed that Balto was changed than Balto 1 and with this good job I saw where he changed. Congratulations:P

Detektiv-Ran, January 22, 2006 at 19: 42

I'm very very agree with you

JennaWolf, January 22, 2006 at 23: 45

Arist mistakes!:p lol

baltofan01WMP[subAM], January 23, 2006 at 01: 04

i agree with jennawolf on that one.

CatWhoHas14Tails, January 23, 2006 at 03: 43

Well, those changes aren't just in those pictures, they're throughout the whole movie. So, I think those "artist mistakes" are just "artist laziness"

Sam(SRA), January 23, 2006 at 14: 10

now THAT is an article. Wow.

Abby, January 23, 2006 at 21: 20

Movies are less depandable nowadays.:(

Sweettart, January 24, 2006 at 00: 18

Balto is great no matter what changes are made.

Writewolf -d.v.w., January 24, 2006 at 21: 33

Wow! you really paid attention. good job:P

drawolf, January 25, 2006 at 14: 38

wow this is one best article I've seen here!

Abby, January 25, 2006 at 15: 41

You know what, some movies like teh Lion King study teh animals and there positions, iN BAlto, I dont think they do that , they just draw them all Arkward and they dont check the other movies. THat may explain all those diferences.

Silver_Deni, January 26, 2006 at 17: 29

hehe..i have noticed those errors toolol ,,,but good job anyways!!!!!!!!:P

steet, January 27, 2006 at 12: 32

Abby -> I said they did this for Balto 1, it's shown in the documentary.

*Ice Wolf*, February 04, 2006 at 20: 31

WOW! I never noticed some of those things! Awesome notices! I never really thought anyone would take the time to go and look deep into these things! I think its so great and most...corection-ALL...of your differences are true. WAY TO GO!:P :P   :P

Wildflower, February 04, 2006 at 21: 04

Nice point, but maybe they had to switch animators, or drawers. Do you think maybe they died or quit?

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 04, 2006 at 22: 10

No, I seriously doubt it's because they died. If anything the original animators did quit because the movie B2 was not going to be as much of a success as the first one. Spielberg was also the original director for the first movie too. If he was the director for the second movie, it would've been 1,000 times better than the one they released. Even so, the animators could've put more effort into the movie, because the plot was already unimpressive. To me, it was anyway XD

Abby, February 04, 2006 at 23: 23

Steet, what do you mean. Seriously. In Bambi and the lion king they study the animals. I do it myself. I'm an artist. I went to a park one time and nearby there was a horse ranch I studied their joints and everything. I dont think the animators did it for the last two movies. I saw the drawings for the first movie. Add if they did study the animals, then why are there so many errors as pointed out? Tha'sust me:P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 05, 2006 at 01: 45

Abby ---> That's exactly what steet said. They studied the animals for their movements, but only for the first movie. They didn't for the last two movies and thats the whole reason why I made this article, and it simply angerfies me that they were so lazy and didn't study the movements of the animals. Sure the graphics are wonderful, but the animation is atrocious.

Abby, February 05, 2006 at 02: 29

I'm with ya there cat person( sorry the name is too long). I dont think they even care. I know its hard to thraw their movements, like I said I tried it my self and its hard, but they are proffesionals. They can at least put in a good effort. They are becoming lethargic and pretentious. Adn I just want to know, what is you real name. :P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 05, 2006 at 02: 55

Classified, I'm afraid °x°

A wanderer, February 05, 2006 at 05: 46

hehe, good article. Not only did Ramoth compare drawing errors, he/she shown how Balto has aged over the movies.:) Not bad, one of the first articles I read that mentioned it. BTW, I have noticed that all fields of work are somehow getting lazy. Even I am getting lazy at mine. hmm I have to ponder about that. :! :red:  :p

A wanderer, February 05, 2006 at 05: 57

Also in B2, Balto has been having these "nightmares" as he calls it. Maybe on that scene in which balto's fur sloppy, was the animators atempt to show his fatigue and tiredness. How would u look if u had the same bad dream for 7-9 dog years(1 year for us)? lol

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 05, 2006 at 06: 41

That is a very good point. He coukd have been fatigued and tired. But even so, I don't believe it was his aging that made him look different, because if you look at Muk and Luk, they haven't aged at all. And they're young, so one would think that they would age faster.

Abby, February 05, 2006 at 18: 19

sure he could of have been tired, but that's no excuse for messing up the animation. I mean we look tired all the time, but I dont look any different, just sleep. and Cat person, what d'ya mean your afraid. :/: :P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 05, 2006 at 18: 50

I don't know what you mean "afraid" when'd I say that? lol

SilverClaw, February 06, 2006 at 03: 04

What a magnificent article! The best I've seen yet! Awesome comparison pics, too!:P

Abby, February 06, 2006 at 15: 35

You said so your self "I'm afraid" if afraid doesn't mean afraid then I dont know what does. I agree Silverclaw I loved the oictures. he clearly shows what he's talking about.:P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 06, 2006 at 23: 30

Oh, I don't remember lol And thank you

Abby, February 07, 2006 at 05: 08

For what and how could you not remmember. You typed it down, I dont mean to pressure you lke this, I'd justy like to know your name instead of call you " CatwhoHas14Tails"°x° :P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 07, 2006 at 23: 01

Just call me Cat14 ;)

Abby, February 07, 2006 at 23: 37

Oh crimminy. °x° :P

baltofan01WMP[subAM], February 10, 2006 at 02: 53

no comment!:!

balto is the best movie ever, February 10, 2006 at 03: 56

Before i start i just want to say wow you need glasses to tone down your vision. you were right as far as I can see on all but one. I have a husky and when he sits he crosses his arms like hes praying just like in the movie i always wonder how but he does.

balto is the best movie ever, February 10, 2006 at 04: 00

They need to go back to b1 get the original artist back together and make b4 maybe this time balto will be old and tell some stroried to his grand kids like Balto the lost chapters

A wanderer, February 10, 2006 at 08: 44

Found it. Not sure if this is relevant, I have read that a polar bear can live around 25-30 years average. Way longer than a dog, and close to a wolf in captivity.

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 10, 2006 at 13: 36

balto is the best movie ever ----> Dogs can't cross their arms like Balto did in the picture, it's not physically possible because their elbows are not shaped like humans. Their upper arms are very short. But they CAN cross their paws, like you said, just not like in the picture I show

Abby, February 10, 2006 at 23: 32

Well excuse me Cat. Balto is the best movie ever.( can I call you BITBME those are tyhe abreviations) was just making a point because is dog does something nsimilar. Seems lie you got a bit of and Attitude, no offense. :P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 11, 2006 at 00: 27

Well you sure don't know Attitude when you see it °x° I was simply proving my point to balto is the best movie ever. I'm also telling people to be a LITTLE more observant of things. :duckiemouth:

Abby, February 11, 2006 at 03: 05

WEll ya wrong there becuase I dont see it, i'm reading it, and you sound real snappy. And observant, puhlease. Look at all thses articles. THis is definitely observant.:P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 11, 2006 at 04: 01

Yes, alot of articles aren't very observant, alot shouldn't even be considered articles, but that's not for me to choose. And no, I wasn't being snappy, you're just thinking I'm being a brat to you. °x°

Abby, February 11, 2006 at 04: 14

WEll ya some are pointless like 'wolf quest : Explained" But that was harsh. Its just some people pointing out thinds and want to know their oppinions. But half the artickes are observant, face it. adn I dont think I know. whatever your just wasting mym time, like the rest, pointless and eccentric.:P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 11, 2006 at 04: 32

Sorry to be frank, but you're wasting your OWN time. And why do you always think that I don't know what you're talking about? The saying "He who knows he is confused is not in the worst confusion" can work in mroe than one way. Think about it. Besides, steet's article explaining Wolf's Rain was wonderful, dispite how much I disliked that movie. KNow why? It's because I'm an open-minded person. Unlike some people °x°

Abby, February 11, 2006 at 04: 59

Yeah but unlike some, i know what is useful and what and is not and what you said was no more than a piece on crap. :P

Abby, February 11, 2006 at 05: 05

and I forgot, i'm also social, unlike some, and not afraid to speak out my mind, which includes ya need help.:P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 11, 2006 at 06: 00

Ok, now you're being absolutely ridiculous. Even for someone who's supposedly "more mature" than I am. If you have anything else to say, then I'd like to hear it. But then again I might be "wasting your time" °x° :icon297: :icon26:

A wanderer, February 11, 2006 at 07: 37

are u guys done yet?°x° :icon300:

Abby, February 11, 2006 at 23: 13

Sorry If we are bothering you wanderer, but too bad a pretetuious hypocrite cant be any smarter than a retard.:P

Abby, February 11, 2006 at 23: 29

sorry, kinda got out of control here. Adn wanderer whats your eal name.:P

baltofan01WMP[subAM], February 12, 2006 at 00: 14

nope?

Abby, February 12, 2006 at 00: 14

ERm, what do you mean nope.:P

CatWhoHas14Tails, February 12, 2006 at 17: 33

Abby. Stop it. I'm done with you. You're being an utter jackass. And that's putting it mildly. I would call you something worse, only this is seen as a kid's site and I don't feel like getting kicked off. I have no trouble telling steet that you're a problem to this site. You're just trying to get me angry, but you're being an immature little brat and you should know better than to try to tempt me. I bet you dont even know what a hypocrite is. If you're going to use mature words, don;t you think the user of those words would be mature too? I think so. So, putting it bluntly, grow up. And if you must know my age. I'm 17

Abby, February 13, 2006 at 02: 56

Of crimminy, okay jack___. what ever. And dont worry, i'm used to it. And i'm pretty sure, that steet knoes I'm a bit of a proble. I dont mean to be. And i'm playing at nothing. And you havent seen a brat have you. Have you looked in the mirror lately. You're sounding just as immature, and Yes I know what a hypocrite is, seeing to I'm talking to one. And grow up, hark who's talking. And 17, oh please, I'm so scared, i think I'm gonna cry. come of it. i dont go down easily and i'n not afraid to speak my mind, but I guess tha was a bit too far. so you grow up, cause you sound just as pretentuos adn fabticated, and I'm not tha gullible. :P :P

Abby, February 13, 2006 at 02: 58

And steet. i'm not trying to get anyone kicked of and I'm not trying to cause any trouble. If I am, my appoligies. Honestly. I think this website is cool. Sorry.:P :P

Abby, February 13, 2006 at 04: 08

Em excuse the typo's, I havent gotton used to typing. And Balto fan, what dyou mean by"nope" :P

baltofan01WMP[subAM], February 14, 2006 at 02: 37

looks like a fun conversation!lol

Abby, February 14, 2006 at 04: 33

fun is an understament. Cat thinks she's all that, but she isnt that bad, she can be nice when she wants to.:P

A wanderer, February 14, 2006 at 08: 33

Had homework. As in my name, I am just a wanderer. Nothing more.:icon328: :allears:

WOW!!!!! I joined Balto Source just a few hours ago, but this is the best written and put together article I've seen yet! I think you did a great job. Balto 1 had the best animation of all three, I think, but they DID make some mistakes. Good job noticing them. No matter how many mistakes they make, though, I'll still always love the Balto movies!

long artical

   Thorn, March 24, 2008 at 01: 32

Balto 1 didn't have really horrible animation. It was more "cleaned up" than both of the other ones. It was in theaters though and the other ones weren't. You notice they seem to slack off if its only on video and isn't going to get alot of bad reputations because not everyone is gonna watch it. And I must point out that jenna does look (I'm sorry to say) fatter in 2 and 3. It must be because of those pups XD

I like looking at this article when I need to improve on my Balto drawings! Helps me draw a younger Balto than a older one.

   Hannah, November 25, 2008 at 09: 54

Yes its annoying. Balto 2 and 3 shouldve looked like the first one. I also noticed in Balto 3, balto is short, while in B1 he is slender. It just looks rushed f you get me.
