Balto - Analysis

Steele is indeed a husky

Kaltag is the smartest... :

Ok so everyone thinks Steele is a Malamute right? Wrong! If you search Husky's and Malamutes on google or something you'll see they are different!

Husky's---

Leaner, faster, taller than Malamutes

Malamutes---

Wider, shorter, stockier than Huskys.

Steele is tall lean and fast! Not short and stuff. That is why I think and know Steele is a Husky!

I agree with you. I don't think Steele would want to have half breed puppies with Jenna so if they did have pups then Steele would want them to be pure bred.

Well that does make sense, but now I have to get used to calling him a husky instead of a malamute.

   catwhohas14tails, July 07, 2007 at 16: 23

Um, if you had pictures of the two breeds, you can clearly see that a malamute is bigger than a husky in all traits.

wow thats great information! I'll have to remember that next time I watch Balto. Thanks and great article! The arguement is solved at last!

I thought that malamutes were bigger. Where did you get your information?

   shadow.wolf, July 08, 2007 at 02: 49

I always thought that he was an oversize husky because he isnt as fluffy and seeing its an animated film the animaters probability made him big on purpose to make him more like a bully

   harpier, July 08, 2007 at 10: 58

Can you please let the breeds alone? I mean cartoon dogs, while based on true ones, are supposed to be diferent! Perhaps not even the makers of Balto knew of what breed was Steele! They just got inspired by real sled dogs, nothing more!

SimbasGuard, although these "dog experts" may be good with RL dogs, I doubt they'll be spot on with cartoons.

Anyway, I believe Steele is a Husky and I'll leave it at that. I jes' wish people would shut.up.about.it.

I guess it makes sense, but you'd be more convincing if you included some pictures for comparison. Also, on the matter of Steele's desire for Jenna, let's just say I suspect he was thinking more of the process than the outcome.

Dragon Rider --> I agree. I don't even think about it that often. husky or malamute, the guy is a purebred jerk.

Harpier took the words right outta my mouth!

I really don't know what to make of the 'Husky or Malamute' question...not that it really matters or necessarily has an answer. I know my dogs, and physically Steele should be a Malamute, but he could still be a Husky, and I do find it very odd that if he were a Mal he should want to get with a Husky (Jenna) if he's so strict about being a pure breed.

fine ill make part to and include some pics! sheesh tough crowd.

   Letranger, July 12, 2007 at 18: 00

MALAMUTES are taller than Huskies, not the other way around.

Malamutes are still fast and lean. And the lines between breeds are SOOOO blurred when the dogs are *animated*.. -_-;

   Dragon Tamer, July 13, 2007 at 00: 54

Webranker

Letranger and harpier have some good points. Steele's breed really just isn't important. Frankly, I only think of him as a malamute because that's how he was in redwolf03's fanfics, and those are where I got the basis for mine.

   warriorcat*ndog, July 13, 2007 at 03: 08

good research but i have also researched somewhat which suggests that malamutes are taller than huskeys and much more muscular.

your right and only huskys have blue eyes

   Fire_paw , July 24, 2007 at 16: 16

I have a question... whether Steele is a husky or Malamute does it really matter? His a dog, and his a cartoon. There's no need to argue over which breed he is, people have thier opinouns.

   Jaypaw, July 24, 2007 at 22: 26

actually, malamutes are taller than huskies if you've ever seen them side by side but yes i do think steele is a husky Aniuhorse---> all dogs can have blue eyes my neighbors smooth collie has blue eyes and so does my friends labrador

   harpier, July 26, 2007 at 14: 29

And, as for his interest on Jenna, well, I think he was only interested in the body, so he probably didn't cared about she being from a different breed.

okay....catwhohas14tails
its not about the picture....husky's are naturally breed bigger than malamutes therefore that picture saw...probably wasnt full breed or had a bredding problem

   Letranger, July 31, 2007 at 01: 53

No no no. Malamutes are bigger than Huskies. Fact. Ask ANYone who knows their dog breeds.

   Banshee ~ Kid, August 01, 2007 at 02: 42

Lol, Malamutes are bigger then Siberian Huskies. But Steele still IS a Husky. They only made Steele so big because he is the villian of the movie.

   graywolf19, August 01, 2007 at 16: 34

i do know my dog breeds!! dont judge me if u dont know me!

   Letranger, August 02, 2007 at 16: 57

No one is judging anyone. All *I* pointed out is that you're incorrect if you think Huskies are larger dogs than Malamutes.

   harpier, August 03, 2007 at 15: 43

Fighting over dog sizes...so CHILDISH! I mean, we can't be totally sure about dog sizes because of certain things to have in mind:

1.mutations
2.diet(dogs that consume more calcium/proteins will grow larger, while those that don't consume enough are always smaller)
3.some dogs may not be geneticly pure.

   Letranger, August 03, 2007 at 17: 58

True true true.
Generally speaking though, Malamute > Husky.

   Cobalt, August 04, 2007 at 23: 58

Steele is obviously a malamute, malamutes are bigger and more well-built than huskies are. Malamutes have blue eyes and, like Steele, are usually black and white. Duh.

   Letranger, August 05, 2007 at 14: 28

Member

Cobalt: While I also lean toward Steele's being more Malamute-ish (although I'm starting to think maybe he IS just an oversized Husky-not a big diff really), blue eyes are a disqualifying fault in Malamutes. And black is only one of their colors. (Of course, Steele could just be a Malamute that they WANTED to have blue eyes, they can do anything they want, after all!)

   harpier, August 14, 2007 at 19: 07

Member

Huskish, Malamutish...what's the difference? They're all sled dogs, and we can't be tottaly sure of their maximum/minimum size. Anyaway, that doesn't mater because, as I stated before, Steele's breed isn't can't be defined because he is a cartoon dog.

   letranger, August 14, 2007 at 19: 55

Exactly, harpier; it's pretty pointless to debate what Steele is precisely. (and this is OT, but is that a Carakiller in your icon, from The Future is Wild?! I LOVE that!! XD)

   harpier, August 15, 2007 at 16: 35

Sure it's a carakiller! What would it be aside from that? A gannetwhale?

   letranger, August 16, 2007 at 02: 34

*chuckle* I knew it! I was just surprised to see it. (Sorry to be OT...>>; )

Random Bunny, August 26, 2007 at 09: 31

First of all, no not all dog breeds has blue eyes.
Second of all, yes Alaskan Malamutes CAN have blue eyes.
Third, I'm pretty sure the animators really didn't really pay much mind to the breed that Steele is. I'm sure what they had on mind was a big, fluffy sled dog that looks like a well known sled dog breed(Husky, Malamute, ect).

And last,
Why does it matter?

   letranger, August 27, 2007 at 22: 09

Member

Random Bunny's 3rd point is spot-on.
Few dogs can have blue eyes.
Huskies are one breed that can.
Malamutes CAN have them technically, but if they do, they're automatically disqualified as it indicates that they're not actually purebreds; Husky must be in them somewhere if they have those blue eyes.

   Banshee Wolf, August 31, 2007 at 08: 42

GrayWolf19--> Obviously CatWhoHas14Tails knows her dog breeds more. Siberian Huskies a shorter then Alaskan Malamutes. Malamutes are bigger and stonger. Siberian Huskies are smaller and faster.

This is funny...everybody was arguing over what dog breed Steele is, and now everybody's arguing over whether it really matters or not! OF COURSE it doesn't!

   merwolf, September 03, 2007 at 23: 05

this makes since but, the real qestion is why is balto so SHORT compared to steele if he is a husky, and balto is part husky part wolf?

xXmileXx, September 07, 2007 at 22: 43

i think steele is a huske too! i agree with you is only logic and knowledge!

i totally agree!!

   SouthPaw, November 23, 2007 at 18: 02

I agree with you steele is a husky. Besides him and jena kinda hav the same build and look. Of course steele is bigger than her but thats because he is a male.

Kaspar, November 27, 2007 at 20: 36

Steele -looks- very much like a husky too; in markings, eye colour and such, so I think he is indeed a husky, and I've never believed anything else.

   ~*Elana*~, November 28, 2007 at 21: 47

I always thought that Steele was a husky anyway XD Anyway proves a point, cool article

   warriorcat, January 12, 2008 at 00: 24

i still think steeles a mal, nothing says mals can't run fast or pull sleds, besides, husky's ears are larger in proportion to thier heads have a looksie:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Siberianhusky1.jpg
and now for a mal:
http://www.malamute.org/Gallery_1/photos/photo_16.html

and avergae size (in height for a husky is only about 21-23.5 in. and mals is about 23-25 in. And mals CAN have blue eyes, but its' not aloud in shows but hes not a show dog soooo.... its also commonly stated that thier ability to pull extremlt heavy weights indicates why steele would naturally be at the front of the team, its easiest for him to pull the weight so he can run fastest. so, in the future provide us with some more facts and pics so we can decide for ourselves which steele looks like most. please research a little more so youll seem like you know what your talking about, k?:)

   SilverMoon, March 15, 2008 at 06: 10

I agree! I had a malamute(may he rest in peace) and he looked nothing like steele! Even if he was a cartoon. Steele's too fast to be a malamute.

   southpaw, March 19, 2008 at 16: 37

That exactly what I said on Anileus article "Steeles breed" Steele is WAY to tall to be a husky and to sleek malamutes are not as goog for sled work as huskies.

   Boa Wolf, April 30, 2008 at 22: 44

how bout being a mix between the to argued dog breeds... that way both sides would be happy ^^

   LateRose of Noonvale, May 17, 2008 at 03: 36

Just wanna get this clear, search it anywhere! Ask anyone that has cammon dog breed sense. Malamuted always pull the back of the sled because they make better wheel dogs! Husky's can run farther without stopping, so they are in the front!

Steelefanatic, June 25, 2008 at 22: 23
Member

I don't really agree because in my dog book, it said that huskies are pretty small and lightly built fot sled dogs and Steele did not seem small or lightly buit at all. On the other hand, it said that Alaskan Malamutes were big built and I saw a picture and it looked like Steele markings and all except it had brown eyes and no collar so I am still saying he's a Malamute.

   silent-wind(shaggystar), July 22, 2008 at 14: 24

He could be either. The fact that the producers and writers didnt say means that they dont care..or dont know themselves what he should be.But i am more leaning toward huskys because he likes jenna who is a husky..and he hates halfbrreds which if they had puppies thier puppies would be half brredd if he were a mal. Also his size means nothing toward his brred because they made him look like a bad guy not thinking of wat he was

   Natticat8, August 04, 2008 at 15: 02

*hits head* You mixed up husky and malamute traits! Malamutes are indeed bigger!
