The explination for at least how Kaltag got his name

balto is the best movie ever :



I am really interested in the actual history of the iditarod and how it started aka Balto, Togo thier owners. So I found a book called Susan Butcher and the Iditarod Trail, a great book and one that is very informative. Well on the inside cover it has a map of the trail and the names of all the check points. On it I saw the name Kaltag almost right in the very middle of the trail. So as I read the book I came across the explination for it, the Iditarod dogs sled trail is broken into an oval shpaed double trail near the middle, on even years the racers take the northern more true serum run path but on odd years they take the southern more coastal path. the spot that they join back toghether at is the kaltag check point which swings back to the coast to Unalakeet which is an Inuit word that means were the east wind always blows. This info led me to belive that Kaltag got his name from the Kaltag check piont on the Idiarod trail.
