Balto - Analysis

The difference between how the characters howl in Balto one and two

me :

In Balto one the howling is much more realistic, it sounds like a real wolf howl.
In Balto two, it sounds like a man putting his hands over his mouth and making a howling noise.

And in Balto one, when you see howling, the bottom of their muzzles are further down then the top, like a wolf.
But in Balto two, the bottom and top half are even, especially in Aleu's case, where she pushes the bottom part of her muzzle out, it looks more like when Steele did an impression of Balto's mother.
Plus Aleu has this signature thing where she holds her leg up when she howls, have you ever seen a wolf do that?
AND i thought it was better in Balto one when the wolves didn't talk, they communicated with howls, it made more of a differnce between wolf and dog, made them more wild, and made them more dignafied. And they were more beautiful then the dogs.

Then in Balto two, you get the awful pack of three wolves, not what I'd call dignafied. The artists made the wolves look more like dogs. Not that dogs aren't beautiful, but in Balto one they were trying to say that wolves weren't disgusting, violant creatures.

Please comment if you agree with anything I've said here. (and I think they should have done away with the magic!)

I agree the howling does sound beta in B1 it's like balto finally found out who he was as boris says 'Balto a dog can not make this journey alone but maybe a wolf can' and as for B2 they did look more like dogs than wolves and Aniu cganges from wolf to dog whats up with that. I recon they should of left her the way she was in the first movie Big, white, wolf:)

agwolfcp, January 12, 2006 at 14: 54

i personally have never had the chance to see if a wolf might hold it's front paw up while howling. it might, and it might not. interesting finds, though!

Writewolf -d.v.w., January 12, 2006 at 15: 54

i agree with the howling thing. they could have done a better job. i don't mind the magic much though. good job;)

white raven, January 12, 2006 at 17: 48

i liked the raven idea in b2 but apart from that it wasnt that good the white wolf isnt as bueatiful and the wolves(apart from the background ones) look all ugly i miss the old style of b1

Detekiv-Ran, January 12, 2006 at 18: 49

I'm very agree with you, because the howl when Balto retourn at home, when he howl with his mother and when wolves howling are very realistic! About Aleu... yeah, it's true that a wolf not hold the paw, but I think that it's a simple bad habit!

balto123, January 12, 2006 at 19: 07

yes wolves do put there paws up duh! plus it dont matter it s the movie! + the fact balto s a hero+ alue may not ave exsisted!:/:

Sierra, January 12, 2006 at 21: 45

Your'e right, Aleu's howl in WQ is kinda freaky, But Balto's in B1 still gives me chills!IN the good way. lol

CatWhoHas14Tails, January 13, 2006 at 00: 34

I agree with you as well. I noticed that not only was the style of how the canines "lips" were drawn in B2 different than B1, I noticed that the everything drawn in B2 is drawn different. The two styles in B2 & B3 are much more sloppy than in B1 and the dogs' movements are not as realistic (like Aleu's habit with lifting her paw up when she howls) for example, in Balto 2 the dogs/wolves all stood more errect than in B1 (have you ever seen a dog's normal stand with their heads ALL the way up?) The howling thing is funky as well, for the sounds, they should've taken them from an actual wolf (or wolf-dog for "more" safety) Hope I made sense XD

baltofan01WMP[subAM], January 13, 2006 at 00: 38

i also agree

me, January 13, 2006 at 19: 01

to balto123, if they do i've never seen them hold their legs up, i didn't need the duh. anyway, i cant beleive i got a note from catwhohas14tails! i love her art! :P

baltomoviefan, January 14, 2006 at 01: 33

it IS weird that aleu holds her leg up...but i recall from some other movie that a wolf WAS holding its leg up when it howls...i just can't remember the name

A wanderer, January 14, 2006 at 08: 10

To answer one question, in B2, I do remember Balto trying to raise Aleu as all dog. Aside from the animators, I think her howl was more dog like because of how she was raised. We have to take into consideration on the time gaps between the ages.

Juuchan17, January 15, 2006 at 07: 07

A good answer: the sequel was low-budget so the art wouldn't look exact (different people drawing it of course) to the original. Plus it was differnt writers too. Those make a difference. But nice info anyway.

baltofan01WMP[subAM], January 15, 2006 at 15: 38

i agree with Juuchan17

Jenna_Huskey, January 15, 2006 at 22: 52

My neihbor has a dog (Yellow lab) that does what Aleu does when she howls.

baltofan01WMP[subAM], January 15, 2006 at 23: 31

cool JH

Olivia_loves_Balto, January 16, 2006 at 15: 27

The style in Balto 2 IS sloppy, can't argue with that. For example, when Aleu was underwater, and when she swam through that trench, the first second you see her in the trench, she's tiny, then when she swims forward, she's suddenly normal size. And when the wolf pack floats away, in the distance they were HUGE when they were supposed to be tiny.

me, January 16, 2006 at 18: 50

jenna_huskey, ahhhhhh! i love labradors, but i said have you ever seen a WOLF do that, thats what i'm saying, that the wolves are to dog like in wolf quest. olivia_loves balto, exactly, the animation just wasn't good enough, if they were going to do a sequal they should have been more clear with the animation.

steet, January 19, 2006 at 20: 41

One thing that people don't understand is : they could do only a sequel with a very small budget, or nothing. What was the best? No sequels? If it was the case, I would bet that less than half of the people on the site here, wouldn't be there and still wouldn't know Balto right now...

wolfcomming, January 20, 2006 at 03: 31

someone woke up one the wrong side of the bed:/:

Thanx thats make me feel better!:) :P your awesome!

balto is the best movie ever, February 10, 2006 at 04: 42

ok the leg up thing is kinda wiered but it is a movie they dont always make much sense and the howling in b1 was alot better but if the wolfes only howled would you still like the movie considering how big a part they played in 2

baltofan01WMP[subAM], February 12, 2006 at 00: 23

i love balto!:P

me, February 12, 2006 at 12: 12

They shouldn't have made Balto 2 the way they did.

Crimsy, February 18, 2006 at 22: 18

I agree completely. Balto One, the howl was fantastic, the white wolf scene still gives me chills whenever I watch it(in a good way of course). It was really well done. Wolf Quest, wasn't as good..but like most sequals to movies, it is never as good as the first. The first Balto, is based on a true story-the other two were just not real..never happened in anyway. Just one more thing, wolfcomming, in your comment, the white wolf in Balto one, is not the same white wolf as in Balto two. :)

me, February 19, 2006 at 14: 44

Crimsy, Yea! Someone who has the exact same thoughs as me!:P

Crimsy, February 20, 2006 at 02: 03

lol And I'm glad someone has the same opinions as me hehe. I have gotten myself into a Balto phase..watched the first one twice in a week...haha! :red:

BALTO_CLAW, March 05, 2006 at 12: 47

Universal can be so domb some times. wolfs dont howle like that! They dont put their legs up! I like Balto 1 better the howling is more real!

me, April 16, 2006 at 17: 38

Exactley!

Aleubalto, April 29, 2006 at 14: 22

kiona girl, May 06, 2006 at 15: 17

   whitewolf(uk), May 22, 2006 at 22: 02

You're absolutely right, the howls in B2 sucked, B1's howl sound fx were much better and aleu looks dumb when she howls, good observation.

I agree, the howling sounds much better in B1:howl:

The way Aleu holds her leg up is rather weird, I must say, I have NEVER seen a real wolf do that before.:howl:

Maybe, but Aleu and Kodi's "leg-up" howling thing is just so unusual!

   The StoneFox, December 15, 2006 at 15: 04

so basicly he was more realistic in Balto 1, right?

the howling in balto 1 does sound better
but balto 2 wasnt made by the same people who did balto 1, if u as me i prefer the drawings nd all in balto 1 in 2 & 3 he looks a little squareish and edgy if you get me ?
