A painting which COULD have been the official cover!

You may have already seen this painting, because I made an article some time ago about what could be interesting covers for the film.

Although, I didn't thought of writing to the author of this. The author's site can be found here :

I was wondering why she drew that painting, and when exactly. So I sent her an email, and I was pretty surprised by the answer :

'The 'Balto' painting was a preproduction painting commissioned by
Universal Studios for the marketing of 'BALTO' before the movie was
released to theaters in 199?. It was a one of many preproduction comps
considered for the Movie Poster and Video Cover done by myself and
other artist.'


Normally, 'pre-production' means that it was made BEFORE the film was even drawn! 
So, I guess it was made probably in 1992 or 1993. Pretty interesting, don't you think? They could have used it for the cover, but finally decided not to do it...
A shame, because personnally, I prefer this one better than the VHS cover (and obviously, MUCH better than any of the DVD cover for Balto!)

Wow! I have seen this picture floating around the net before, but I never knew that it could have been the cover. Like you said, they should have used this one. It looks a whole heck of a lot better than the one Universal used.

They've always made bad moves with Balto anyway, since the release of the film in theaters...How could they commission this painting and say "no, it's not good enough"?? I can't understand that...Really, the VHS one was far from being as good as this one...Even if it's still better than the horrible DVD covers.

I wondered about that painting. I though the exact same as you Steet. I thought that was going to be the cover but it just never did make it there. This would of been the best front cover for it. I wish they would of made this one the front cover. That would make a good "Balto 4" cover... well if they would ever think of doing that. If they did I would be so happy.

You're right although I didn't think the VHS cover way "that" bad...It wasn't as bad as the DVD one. (Plain looking) Nice find.

It is a beautiful picture. Maybe it could be used for the Special Edition if it gets through to Universal and they actually make one, that would be really good, and the cover would look outstanding. It's colourful, had mostly all the characters and a beautiful background. What wouldn't catch your eye? It would be perfect as the Special Edition cover!

the DVD cover really sucked... it was like a cut out of the one used on the cover on wolfquest... it was a boring cover.

You may be able to find the real size and print it out to be the DVD or VHS cover XD!

I think this is the best of the possible covers! As you had said, it is MUCH more appealing than the covers they have for the VHS & (definatly) the DVD. I wish they would have used this one. It would have been great. And I have never seen this before, but it looks grand!... Who ever made the covers that they DID choose I don't think could beat this. Thats really interesting. =] --Mayaa

i agree its much more accurate to the movie than the other cover its much more detailed and it shows all of the characters including n,k&s on the bottom
