Lately, there has been a lot of articles about the breeds in Balto. Many had different views of dogs like Nikki, and Star. In this article, i would like to compare dogs and see which is most like the character. I won't really metion the obvious, maybe add a pic thats it, but i plan to look at the ones we are slightly troubled about.
Balto: Obviously, half wolf half dog.

above is a wolf dog next to a pure bred husky
Jenna: Also obvious, a Siberian Husky.

It's not her breed but her colour. Obviously, in the movie its a little redder than the real dogs, but what colour would be the colour she is in real life?

This colour, which is light red is quite alike. But there is also another reddish, but darker, called Copper. Below is a dog in this shade (copper)

Steele: Now, here there has been a lot of arguing between Steele's breed. I personally think Steele is a husky, but many say he is a malamute. Well, lets compare the dogs.

I think this husky has the same strong build as Steele. His body looks quite alike. Though the markings are different. Below is a pic of a husky, with Steele's markings.
Now, i think this dog here looks just like Steele! Look at his markings, just the same. And the patches around the eyes, and the blue eyes. This is exactly the same as Steele!

Here is a malamute, im sorry to say, but i looked as hard as i could and couldn't find a malamute with the same markings as Steele. I also think the malamute is too bulky for Steele, and sorry to black and white huskys, but doesn't have the same mischievous look! So, i would have to say, that Steele is a Siberian husky.
Kaltag: everyone says, that Kaltag is a Chinook. Now, before everyone says, 'yea! Katags a chinook!', i thought we could look in to them a bit closer to really see if Kaltag is a chinook.

Above is a chinook, i think this dog does look quite alike to Kaltag with a sort of similar expression, colour ect.

So here are some pics of Kaltag, i have tried to find some pics of chinooks that look similar. Here are some i found:

This is chinooks (and one husky), so yes, Chinooks do pull sleds. They seem to be good sled dogs.

Here's a chinook's full body. But some things are bothering me. Where is the big husky tale? This tale isn't the same as Kaltags. And there doesn't seem to be any sorta eye patches, but they may be just an extra that the animators put on. Anyway, most other photos look like this. I couldn't find the same marks or bushy tale of Kaltag.

I couldn't really find any huskys the same. But, i woud say light red would have been Kaltag. But i was thinking, maybe Kaltag could be a cross? Husky/Chinook. Well, where is he getting the curly tale like a husky? But maybe, along with the eye patch, just added that in even though Chinooks don't have it.
I will continue this article in another, coming soon. It will be about the breeds of Star, Nikki, the extra dogs on Balto and the others (Mel, Dixie ect.)

well also people been saying that alasken huskys are the biggest well thats accually not true alasken huskys are very very small and steele's biger than balto so he's probably a malamute |

Great article! I found A pic of a dark red husky that lookes just like Jenna, but you beat me to the writing the article part. Plus, I think that Kaltag is half Husky, half chinook. I think that Steele is a very large husky, but I could be wrong. I think I found out what the random sled dogs on the movie are! I think they're Malamutes, because they are so bulky and muscular. |

Nice article! I think that Jenna was a 'copper' husky, she's too dark to be a light red. |

I read Part 2 first. But anyway, this is a great article! Sometimes you point things out in such a way, I have to agree with you! Anyway I think that Jenna is a copper huskey. How long did it take to research and write the article? |

Oh, that husky looks exactly like Steele! I want to hug him

The Husky-vs-Mal for Steele thing may well remain mysterious forever. He could be considered either...he's got a lot of Mal traits, but the blue eyes of a Husky, and as this article includes, Husky traits too. I honestly think he's just somewhere in between, because he's a cartoon, and he can be. No one looks just like their real-life counterparts, they just have the 'essence' of whatever breed(s) they're modeled on. But nice article, really-Kaltag is certainly a Chinook. |

-Great Article, but I have one thing... Steele is a pure breed Husky, and he oviously dosn'tt like mixed breeds. If Kaltag was a Husky/Chinook cross, I don't think Steele would like to be seen with him much. |
