OK, I watched the movie again the other day, and I was wondering why the bear attacked Balto, Muk, Luk and Boris. Well the bear came out of nowhere and who did it go for first? Boris! Why? Because he's a goose!

Bears eat meat (off course) and obviously he saw Boris and thought he would be tasty. And he went and tried to attack Boris first!

Balto came and tried to help Boris and the Bear probably thought that Balto was trying to take his prey. So he attacked them. He didn't eat Muk and Luk because thier his own kind.

And my other conclusion would be that he's probably rabid. 

Or that he was a she and that he just  attacked because she had cubs.

Or that they were in his territory and he wanted them out.

muk and luk are cubs it might still have wanted to eat them, if hungry enough some bears would attck and kill there own kind although because most cubs are born durring hibrnation its not likly but can happen if food is scares

No, the bear wasn't rabid and the bear didn't have any cubs. The group must have trespassed on the bear's territory, and Boris, being the closest one to the bear, was the one that the bear attacked first. I don't think attacking Boris had anything to do with it being hungry. That's going a little too deep and off topic with the movie. The animators probably wanted to give Boris that personality that he's more of a flight, instead of fight, animal. So, then, Balto would come and be given the title of the "brave hero" for the scene. Understand? They wanted to show how Balto was brave.

Those are good points. I agree with RayJ that Universal wanted to show that Balto was brave, but it could have possibly been any of the ideas you posted. Good article .
