Was balto really based off the true story, or is there some Togo in the story?

We all know about the true story of Balto and how he and Togo gallently saved the town of Nome, Alaska. But then theres the animated film and although it said based on a true story, they failed to mention which dog is it based on more.

In the movie, when the team gets lost, Balto sets out to look for the them with only his friends Boris, Muk , Luk, and Jenna who was following close behind the 4 although they didn’t know it.When the group meets up with a Grizzly bear it’s Jenna to the rescue and after the bear has been defeated, Balto sets off alone to continue his search since Jenna’s been hurt and can’t get home without Boris and the polar bears. When Balto finds the team he dodges Steele and star gives him the harness to run in front of the team. Well in the book ‘Togo’ Robert J. Blake tells about Togo’s puphood and all the strange things he did. One of those things was when Seppala went on a trip with his other dogs. He left Togo with a women for her to keep as a pet. Togo crashed through the women’s parlor window and ran off to find the team-alone. When he found the team he was permitted to run free along side the team but kept distracting the dogs so Seppala moved him to the front of the team. Sound familiar?
Another issue is Balto’s character design. As you can see in the photo’s below Togo looks much like the animated Balto while the real Balto had black fur, not brown like Togo. Was this a coincidence or something more?

Hmmm,I think you are right aswell but if you notice movies always make girls for boys..So I think that Togo shouldve taken the place of Jenna and Baltos deisgin shouldve been different it wouldve made an all together better film.;)

hmmm....that's very interesting, i never really thought too much about it to be honest, but i think you just snagged something there. Yes, Balto has almost the same leg markings as Togo too...Nicely written by the way.

I think it was coincidence. I think it all was- the team and letting ones run it were. White Fang does the same thing of jumping through a window. And Balto's look is the classical wolfdog mix look.

why didnt they call the film togo then? it does seem more likley based on togo or the could have called it talto or somthingwell i'll just pretend its the same dog as balto because i dont want to believe balto isnt well baltolol

Togo was in the 1925 syrum run with a bunch of other dog teams (including balto's :P ). His team origanally was bringing the medicine back when the dogs got two tired and their paws were bleeding. So when balto's team found them togo's musher Seppala gave the medicine to them. Balto's team got into nome first with the medicine and togo came next. So there ya go :)

ok this is a MOVIE PEOPLE! directors often change history for reasons unknown to man kind but im glad it turned out htis way. balto is my favorite movie even as a near adult. it got me through so many hard time and brought hope and joy to the worst times in my life. it could have been better animated and they better make b4 b5 and maybe even a b6. P.S. cancer is something that drains the soul and steal child hood. Memories like balto and the lion king litteraly saved my life. i would be lost without you balto.

In real life, Togo was a very famous lead dog and racing trophy winner. Balto was considered a second-rate freight-pulling dog. Togo led the team (Seppala's) that ran the longest and most dangerous leg of the serum relay, 91 miles (mostly over ice that could have broken up at any second). Balto got famous because he led the last team (Kaasen's) and actually delivered the serum to Nome (going 53 miles). Balto rose to the occasion but Togo did more work at more peril.

Also, Togo is in the pedigree of nearly every single registered Siberian Husky that exists today (if you trace the pedigree back far enough). He is considered one of the founding dogs of the breed. Balto, on the other hand, appears in no pedigrees. Why? Because Balto was neutered by his owner (Seppala), because he was thought to be not good enough for breeding.

Great article. I think tha tit was really moe based on Balto though. Balto has been in the museum so long that now his fur has faded so he looks black. Thats just what I think
