About the unknown dog in Balto 1

Many Balto fans who have watched Balto numerous times will now be wondering who the unknown dog is. He is on for less than ten seconds, but across the world people ask 'Who is he?'

He appears when Jenna, Sylvie and Dixie are walking throught town, and Dixie is talking about her new collar. He looks back at the three girls for a second, when his owner drags him off screen.

This is strange, as this dog looks completely different to background characters. He is coloured Blackish and greyish. Ideas I had was that maybe it was Yak, from Balto 2. It is more or less the same colour.

I completed a bit the articles, with the screenshots. Yes, this is kinda strange, especially that it is a very detailed and well animated character for a background character we only see a few seconds...Maybe he could be seen in another scene that got deleted. Maybe this was a design for a character that didn't get to the final cut, or maybe an old design for Balto that they re-used...I really don't think there is any relation with Balto 2, though. Don't forget it was released 6-7 years before B2, and at the time I'm sure they didn't even think there would ever be a sequel...

Err...do you know what a character design is? Of course this is not Aleu, and about what you said WTW, that's not the point of this article...Read better. The strange thing about this dog is that he is completly different than all the other background dogs.

It is possible that it is an in-joke. As it says on the link above the comments: "The joke being that the old design of Balto comes into view, tries to get to Jenna but is then yanked away never to appear in the movie again!"

As I said before it can't be Aleu because she wasn't born yet. They might have re-watched Balto 1 and saw his/her disign and desided it would be an appropriet design for Aleu. Aleu deffinetly can't be the mystery dog! But who cares.... Actually I do! I've always had a wonder about how come they make him appear on screen ... Still a mystery!

Well. I find as it says in the article that "the mystery dog" looks like Aleu. But if he looks like Aleu he looks like Balto also. What I'm trying too say is he's a husky he looks like Bslto.... I't has too be Balto's father!!!! They look the same. When he was looking back maybe he knew Balto was hiding and infact was looking back at Balto and not the three girls. See when he looks back he seems too be looking back farther then the girls. If you look at the pictures closely you'll see him looking back really far not really close. Also if you look closely you can see he looks older. We all could be wrong or some of us may be right!

I don't know what's all the fuss about that dog. I think he is just a character that looks at Jenna and says in his mind "Oh what a good-looking girl" and gets pulled off screen. He was just kinda a joke to make people see the male dog freak out over a beautiful girl. I think that's all it was about.

He was just meant to show how sexy Jenny was and nothing more (though I keep getting uglier thoughts on how it could've been if it went one step forward, not something you could get away with in a G-rated flick). Any simularities between this pooch and in the sequel are purely co-incidential.

I was on a site called balto's animation gallery(I think) and on there they had production sketches from Balto1 and one of them, a balto head sketch, looks just like that mystery dog, I think it was probably an early design for balto that the animators scraped and used as a back ground character to save designing a new one. *sigh* He is just a background and is NOT togo and is NOT Baltos dad. If he were any of these things, he would have played a bigger role. he is just a dog. The animators must have just thought about doing a good background dog, after all, it is in the beggining and the animators arn't lazy yet. But it is just a background dog, nothing more°x°

I read the article and some comments and some said he looks like Aleu and Balto so some says he's Baltos father but som say not. I say not i don't think he's Baltos father but maybe his Baltos brother or halfbrother??? I think he's Baltos halfbrother but they don't now about each other. What do you think??

He does look a bit different, but maybe it was to make him stand out to show how Atrrative they are. But I do think that it may of been Balto's old design, but they din't want it to go to waste.

I think it was meant as a joke, because the unknown dog really does look a lot like Balto's original design (see Fluke's Tribute to Balto for storyboards and such). It would be like Balto's old design wishing that Jenna would notice him too XD Just a thought, but that could be why the animators took such obvious care to make him noticeable. -Iditarod
