Balto - Analysis

analysis of steele in Balto...

lunawolf383 :

Was Steele part wolf??????? Here's some clues if he was or not:

1. Balto was a hybrid and hybrids are supossed to be taller then average sled dogs, huskies, and other dogs husky- sized and for the most part, Balto is bigger or as big as most of the sled dogs in the  movie except for......Steele, who is the biggest sled dog in the movie.

2. Balto falls off the cliff and climbs back up after realizing he's part wolf (and hinting that only a wolf could survive the fall and be okay). Steele climbs back up faster then Balto and gets home before him!!!!

3. Boris tells Balto that only a wolf could survive the journey alone and Balto barley survives it when he has Steele's team and the white wolf for back up. Yet, after falling off a cliff, Steele somehow gets back in front of Balto (before Balto falls off the cliff) and makes it back to Nome all by himself.

Well,Steele was older then Balto,The cliff Balto was on fell apart and he had dig himself out while steele only fell off,and Balto had to track them down and then bring them back, while Steele followed them back and was able to stray them off course giving him a head-start.It is somewhat possible of him being part wolf still.

Steele is not part wolf, he is a purebred Siberian husky (hence his blue eyes). Just because he is taller than Balto doesn't mean anything. Siberian huskies can get as large as Steele. Trust me, I've seen some. Steele is only taller than Balto because he is the "bad guy" of the story. The animators wanted him to look big and tough.

Also, Balto did now just realize he was part wolf when he fell off the cliff. He already knew he was part wolf long before that. And the reason why Balto got up slower after he fell off the cliff was because he nearly got torn up into pieces by Steele. Steele, however, was not hurt as much as Balto, so he had the strengh to get up much faster.

Welll...we all know Steele's NOT part wolf; the creators confirmed that. And the rest was basically about Steele's character and what was convenient for the producers. For example: Steele was bigger than Balto to suggest to the viewers that he was intimidating and a bully. The fact that Steele reached Nome faster than Balto was due to the fact that: 1) He had less problems on the way back (such as falling off of yet another cliff, crossing a thin ice bridge, and escaping an avalanche) and 2) Simply because that was how the plot needed to work. it's a cartoon; the producers can do whatever they want with the film.

These are just my thoughts, but I hope they help.

I hate to shoot down your theories, but the crowd's right on this one. It was definitely established that Steele was purebred.

The fact that Steele was indeed a purebred husky may be true, but bear in mind that all modern dogs are descended from the wolf, so in a way, all dogs are part wolf.

Bassist-->Yeah, well, I think the point in THIS particular article was to present suggestions that Steele was part wolf, as in "half-wolf" or "one-quarter-wolf", etc. Though you do make a good point.

Didn't you read the main page? Steele is not part wolf. Not ever is he. Siberians are really big dogs, so that can go on his large side and the only reason why he was quicker than Balto because he pratically torn him apart. Also, he lived a better past than Balto (well from the movie it shows how people love him, until the end) and got treated better and trained more than Balto. Sorry for bashing your thoughts, but it was an allright article. I've seen worst, trust me. You did allright.

Steele got up the cliff faster because Balto had to drag up that heavy crate and Steele got home faster because he used Balto's marks and he tricked Balto's team by making false paths so they went off course.

I have photocopies (and the only photocopies made, maybe) of original Steele sketches. There was some scribbling about him being a Siberian Husky. PROOF.

Ok Steele was NOT part wolf. He was bigger than Balto b/c he was the villian of the story, and two Balto could be smaller depending on which of his parents body size he took on, seeing that his father was a husky and smaller than a wolf. Agian Steele was able to survive the cliff Fall b/c you can't kill the villian, than there wouldn't be a plot except to save the children and thats it. He made it back home first, b/c he followed BALTO'S marks and then messed them up so Balto would have to take the long way around, hoping he would take the team, and get lost through the blizards, but he didn't. AND if you remeber correctly in the last picture you have on your atricle, who out ran Steele? Baltolol But good point to bring out, it was a new article and original so good job! Keep it up.:Be_happy:

It's an animation. The makers of Balto made Steal taller and more muscular to fit his character, not because he was 'part wolf.'

Perhaps Steele is just on the wolflike side, but he is purebred. Don't forget that his breed is one of the most wolflike of all dog breeds.

Steele had to survive the fall because, A this is a film for a family, not a film full of death and B Steele most likely survived because the cliff he was on wasn't even half as long as the one Balto fell down, and with a body like Steele's, I'd be surprised if he HAD died. He's a pure breed, he wouldn't have been town hero if he were a Wolf/Dog like Balto, the story would make no sense if Steele were loved for being a wolf dog and Balto was hated for being a wolf dog like Steele.

I disagree because, as you've seen from the fan news, that it has been confirmed he's a purebred husky. And, the moviemakers wanted some elements of animated movies when he climbs back up the cliff. It's a movie, as they always say! sorry though

dogs come in all shapes and sizes plus the cliff Balto was on broke unlike steele's so therefore giving steele a head start and we all know steele is not part wolf

Wait, anonim, who ever said that Steele was older than Balto? Balto was either two years-old or six years-old. And after twelve months, age doesn't matter for the height, they're done growing by then.

great arcticle, but the two cliffs were different right? and Balto and the team were held back because of steele's marks and the cliff. once agin, great arcticle!

I agree with joker. but that is a really good point you brought up

   Dusty11, October 23, 2008 at 23: 21

Its only because the people who made the film wanted little kids to understand that steele is the ''Bad guy''.So they made him bigger and able to do things faster than Balto.[Balto can still run faster though]

ye never know. steele is unusually large for a husky. compared to balto in those pics there.

I say that Steele is all husky.

Junei, who ever said Siberian huskies couldn't grow that big? No one. I've seen them that big before.

Steele is 100% Alaskan Malamute.

He's supposedly older than Balto and he's bigger probably to make him look tougher, as a benefit to his character rather than his genes.

Don't forget, Steele probably made it home faster because he no longer had a sled team to pull along, being on his own he was able to move faster and he most likely followed Balto's tree-marks(while messing them up, too)
