Balto - Analysis

Where they got the idea for Balto's heritage

Writewolf :

As we all know, the real Balto was a full bred husky. So you have to wonder where Universal got the idea.

It may have been from another musher in the run to Nome. 'Wild' Bill Shannon was the first in the relay. His lead dog Blackie was black with a white cross over his chest. His grandfather was a timberwolf. This was cause for some arguments over breeding wolves with sled dogs. Some mushers in the gold rush era did this to create a breed of dog that has more endurance on the trail. Apparently Shannon thought the same way.

I think this was just for making the story more interesting; this is what Simon Wells says in the documentary on the dvd.

idk i always thought that they made him part wolf tryin 2 say that a pure bred no matter how strong a lead dog he/she was could still not stand up 2 the conditions met by balto so they mixed him with wolf that plue the fact that the movie needed more conflict besides blizzards and such,it needed a villian like all great movies

They need the outsiders to feel like there not alone, thats why they made balto part wolf, but im just guessing, great article:P

Cool, Balto may have not been the half wolf... But, one was still in there racing...

meekocatcool, April 02, 2006 at 10: 24

Well,The people who made the movie might have just wanted Balto to be set apart from the other sled dogs in the movie. They wanted Balto to be diffrent. They probally thought this would make him more heroic,to be an underdog.Like all the great heros in the movies, like Luke Skywalker who was also a underdog.Without Balto being part wolf their wouldn't be much of Balto the hero would their?Great article!:icon299:

Great info, I had no idea they actually bred dogs with wolves, whether wild bill did that, there's no way to know, but I think for the Balto films they just did it to add an extra twist to the film, to make Balto an outcast, without it we wouldn't have that wondeful scene with Balto and the white wolf!

Agree with Steet, it needed a storyline, the Balto film is pretty much nothing like the real story.

Aniuwolf, June 18, 2006 at 06: 41
