Balto is, obviously, the main character of the story. Rejected by the town due to its origins (his father is a husky and his mother a wolf, making him an outcast hybrid), he has been raised by Boris, the russian goose, in an old abandoned boat in the outskirts of Nome.

He's fascinated by the sled dog races, which will lead him to meet Jenna, a beautiful pure breed husky fairly popular, and he immediatly fall in love with her. But his meeting with Steele (the main dog in the most famous sled, respected by everyone) and his team mates is less friendly, and he'll have to face this situation many times, with only his courage and good sense to face them.

The diphteria disease being declared, Balto will absolutely try everything in is power to bring back the medicine and cure Rosy, the young mistress of Jenna. That's why Endurance, Fidélité et Intelligence are the words given to describe him.

Jenna is a young husky belonging to the young girl Rosy. She is friend with other female dogs like her, Dixie et Silvie, and they're all desired by the other dogs. When everyone admire Steele, Jenna avoid him : she doesn't like to be considered as an easy manipulated object.

When she meets Balto, she's first surprised then inquisitive, and even if he doesn't let the time for her to know his feelings, she discover that she loves him too. She will then do everything to help Balto to accomplish his destiny.

Steele is the most admired sled dog of the town, and also the most vicious and sly. He would like to take Jenna's love, but she rejects him, when at the same time she seems to protect Balto; he isn't easily fooled, so he's engaging himself and his sled team mates (including Nikki, Kaltag et Star) to put sticks in Balto's wheels. With a vengeance mind, Steele is able to obtain everything he wants, and he doesn't care much for what can happen to the humans.

Boris is a goose who has left his native russia for settling down in Nome. Boris is, in a way, Balto's adoptive father, as he taught him life and always give him advices, even in the worse situations. Behind his grumbling personnality, he is wise and sensible. He also takes care of two young polar bears, Muk and Luk. All he wants in life is to get the best future for his "children". He's also a bit comical, as he always get into funny situations...

Rosy is Jenna's mistress. The diphteria touches everyone, and Rosy gets sick, to her parents grief, and Jenna who fears to lose her. She's also the main reason for Balto to make the impossible in order to save her, besides she is the only human to trust him. She is a lovable little girl, kind and adorable.

Muk and Luk are two young polar bears, who have the particularity of not knowing how to swim. Or, at least, it's what they think... They are joyful guys, jokers and difficult to control, but that doesn't prevent them from loving their uncle Boris, and Balto.

Nikki, Kaltag et Star are part from the best sled dog team in the town, directed by Steele. Even if they respect and help him to get rid of Balto, they still doubt about his machinations. But the most important for them is to do their duty, in all situations, and especially when they will have to bring back the medicine.
