How did balto get fanoud in real life?

Balto's team (driven by young Norwegian Gunnar Kaasen) was the final team in the relay, which was also the one which arrived in Nome, to waiting and nervous citizens, and to an over-eager press corps. Of course they were going to be lionized by the press and then, afterwards, the public. Especially the lead dog of the team. After all, the names of the other twelve dogs of the team have been forgotten by most of the public, which is unfair to them (and to the rest of the dogs who ran as well...and there were many. Some of whom died during the run).
